That said, two weeks is two weeks, and while releasing a “launch trailer” so early may seem a bit premature, it has been a trend to do so in the video game industry for years now. In any case… new footage! Clocking in at a brief one minute, the trailer is short and snappy, reusing some footage from previous trailers, especially the one with Reagan and the team in the meeting room. Still, we do get some quick glimpses at new characters, locations and story beats. Perseus himself, the Soviet double agent and implied-but-almost-certainly-actually-not antagonist of the game, isn’t mentioned outright, only alluded to by talk of a conspiracy that threatens to wipe out half of Europe. This is Call of Duty, after all, you’ve got to one-up the previous installment in terms of explosions. The trailer needs more zombies, though.
Some of the locations we see include East Germany, Angola, the Black Sea and brief snippets of what may be a Vietnam flashback sequence - the Vietnam War ended in 1975 and the game takes place in 1981 - as well as some other hard to place locations without any blatant defining traits. A large underground KGB vault or archive also shows up at one point, so expect a lot of shady dealings. The whole overarching style of a Cold War spy thriller with conspiracies and double-agents shouldn’t be mistaken for a quieter, more stealthy take on CoD, though - there are more than enough direct shootouts, car chases and explosions based on the trailer. At one point you get to blow up a plane with a remote controlled car that has C4 strapped to it. All in a day’s work, right? Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War launches soon on the 13th of November, 2020.
