Kojima Productions confirmed the “enhanced and expanded” version of Death Stranding on Thursday, June 10. The studio’s announcement came with a nearly 3-minute long teaser. It showcased Sam Bridges, the protagonist of Death Stranding that was played by Norman Reedus, somewhere on an underwater level. Not one to let an opportunity to be cheeky slip by, the trailer for Death Stranding Director’s Cut also featured a reference to Kojima’s lovechild, Metal Gear, with Sam trying to figure out how to equip a box.
When Is The Death Stranding Director’s Cut PS5 Release Date?
Hideo Kojima himself was the one responsible for breaking the news for Death Stranding Director’s Cut. The enigmatic auteur stopped by over at the Summer Game Fest to showcase the latest trailer for the PS5 version of Death Stranding. As is always the case with Kojima, the reveal was as weird as it was hype-worthy. Unfortunately, while the announcement of Death Stranding Director’s Cut is good news for those who loved Kojima’s latest title, the trailer didn’t really give much information. Kojima nor his studio confirmed a release date either. At this point, all we know is that this is going to come to the PlayStation 5. Everything else is unknown. If it’s any consolation though, Summer Game Fest host, Geoff Keighley, confirmed that the full reveal for Death Stranding Director’s Cut is “just weeks away”. This could also be a confirmation that the next PlayStation State of Play is coming soon.
What’s New in Death Stranding: Director’s Cut?
This might be the first time that Death Stranding Director’s Cut was confirmed, but this isn’t the first time most have heard of it. Earlier this 2021, multiple leaks were claiming that Kojima Productions was working on a PS5 version of Death Stranding. In addition to enhanced graphics, the PS5 version would also come with new content that wasn’t available for Death Stranding at launch. As for what exactly the new content for Death Stranding: Director’s Cut is going to be, we’re just going to have to wait for Kojima Productions or Sony to go ahead and reveal it. One thing is for sure though, the Director’s Cut is going to be larger than the original Death Stranding game. The trailer showed us a glimpse of a new area that wasn’t available in the original game. The well-armed enemies weren’t there either and it looks like the Director’s Cut is going to take cues from the Metal Gear franchise. Death Stranding was originally released back in November 2019. It served as Kojima Productions’ debut title following Kojima’s departure from Konami. Although we don’t rank it as one of Kojima’s best games, the niche title was commercially and critically successful enough to become one of the first exclusives for the PlayStation 4 to receive a PC port, which was released in July 2020. It is currently unknown if the Director’s Cut is going to be a permanent exclusive to the PlayStation 5. The added content might be made available for the PC version later on. Speaking of Director’s Cut, another PlayStation title getting similar new content exclusive to the PS5. Final Fantasy VII: Remake Intergrade will add an entirely new expansion centered around Yuffie Kisaragi on top of visual enhancement and gameplay improvements on the base game.
