GTA Online expanded the chaos and mayhem of the Los Santos into an online lobby where you could drive, rob and play with your friends. Despite being seven years old, the game continues to receive free major expansions and DLCs. So, essentially, you can never run out of things to do in the city of Los Santos.

Is GTA 5 Cross-Platform?

Unfortunately no, Grand Theft Auto V does not have any crossplay support. This means that if you’re playing on one console, say a PS4, you won’t be able to join your friend online in GTA Online who’s playing the game on Xbox One or PC. Note that even if you are playing on a PS4 and wish to play with a friend on PS3, that is not possible either. The lack of cross-play also means that you cannot transfer you save files from one system to another. So if you started your GTA Online journey on a PS4 but would like to continue to it on a PC, you can’t do it! You’ll have to start fresh. There are a ton of technical issues that prohibit the cross-platform compatibility. The most important of these are buried deep within the game logic. While most of the console game logic is based on frame rate (thanks to the non-variable frame rate), the same is not the case for PC. Then there’s the fact that GTA V came out when the world was transitioning from PS3 and Xbox 360 to PS4 and Xbox One, which made it all the more difficult.

Will GTA 5 Online ever have Cross-Platform Compatibility?

Considering the fact that GTA 5 Online is almost 8 years old at this point and we’re already hearing rumours about GTA 6, it’s unlikely that Rockstar will spend its time and resources on bringing cross-platform compatibility to GTA 5 Online. Recently, Rockstar released a stand-alone version of Red Dead Online (the multiplayer component of Red Dead Redemption 2) for only $5. In this day and age, cross-platform compatibility is completely possible and we even have a few examples of the same amidst us. Accordingly, many had high hopes that Red Dead Online would be cross platform compatible, but it was not meant to be. That’s right, there’s no cross-platform compatibility in Red Dead Online either. At this point, we can just hope GTA 6 Online will have cross-platform compatibility so we can finally play with our friends on the other side. The latest DLC announced for GTA 5 Online is a brand new heist, The Cayo Perico Heist, which also includes a map expansion! It arrives on December 15.
