Famitsu has an annual tradition of interviewing Japanese creators about their plans for the new year. This year, the website interviewed 141 creators from various game companies on what is in store for gamers in 2023. We are hoping to have a big year in 2023 for Japanese video games.
Capcom
Capcom’s Hideaki Itsuno shares that he is currently working on Dragon’s Dogma 2 and he’s hoping to give updates about the game soon. “I’m currently immersed in the production of Dragon’s Dogma 2, so much so that I’m losing my sense of what season it is. Things are moving along well, so I hope to further our development progress so that we can share an update with you as soon as possible.” Takuro Hiraoka gives an update about Exoprimal, stating Capcom will release more info by the next spring. Ryozo Tsujimoto teased that gamers should watch out for Capcom’s presentation at the Tokyo Game Show.
Konami
Konami Digital Entertainment’s Noriaki Okamura shared that the company’s keyword for next year is “Long-awaited.” Okamura says, “outside of Momotaro Dentetsu, we will be able to announce several titles [in 2023], so please look forward to it.” Konami recently announced working on four new Silent Hill projects. It will be interesting to see which of the projects gets announced in 2023. We hope to have more details for what looks to be the next mainline entry in Silent Hill f.
Square Enix
Game director Yoshinori Kitase revealed plans for additional content as Final Fantasy VII is celebrating its 25th anniversary. “As the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII continues to stir up the excitement with its seven campaigns, I hope to be able to deliver an update on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth when the timing is right. Please look forward to it!” Square Enix is preparing to release Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai as well. The upcoming action RPG is reportedly in the final stages of development. The Dragon Quest game may be released next year for the PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
SEGA and Koei Tecmo
SEGA looks to keep producing more Sonic content in 2023. According to Takashi Iizuka, the studio is preparing for a “second wave to keep the fans happy and maintain that momentum going into 2023.” SEGA will be releasing additional content for Sonic Frontiers in the coming year.seg Tomohiko Shou reveals Koei Tecmo Games will be announcing two titles by January. Game director Fumihiko Yasuda reports that the production of Rise of the Ronin is entering its climax. Koei Tecmo is set to also have a big year with the release of Wild Hearts and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. Overall, it looks to be a big year for Japanese game developers. We are also expecting a big splash from FromSoftware with Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon. It’s likely the most anticipated game of next year considering Elden Ring had the largest haul of Game of the Year awards in 2022.
