Director Matt Reeves sat down with Collider for an interview to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of Cloverfield. The director confirmed that he is working on a sequel to 2022’s The Batman. “I’m not going to answer that question, but we are working on a movie. I’ll put it to you that way.” Reeves said. “We’re deep in it and my partner and I are writing, Mattson [Tomlin] and I are writing, and it’s really exciting, and I’m really excited about what we’re doing.” While Reeves did not mention The Batman directly, the revelation that he is working with Mattson Tomlin points us towards a sequel to the movie. Tomlin worked with Reeves on the script for The Batman. During the interview, Reeves also mentions his excitement to work with actor Robert Pattison. The director said that he was “really excited to be doing that with Rob, because I just think he’s such a special person and actor.” The revelation from Reeves is a positive indication that The Batman and Robert Pattison are safe from the changes being implemented by James Gunn and Peter Safran over at DC. The co-CEOs of DC Studios have recently made big movies to make way for a new DC Universe. Gunn recently announced that Henry Cavill will not be returning as Superman in the new DCU. Black Adam’s Dwayne Johnson will not be coming back as well. Johnson reportedly tried to take control of DC Films prior to Gunn and Safran being tapped to lead the studio. Wonder Woman 3 has been shelved for the time being with the future of Gal Gadot in the superhero universe in limbo. There are also reports that Cavill’s Superman and Gadot’s Wonder Woman cameos in the upcoming The Flash movie have been scrapped. Gunn has previously stated that he is focused on telling the biggest story ever told. The director is working with Safran on a ten-year plan for the newly minted DC Universe. A new slate of films, TV shows, and video games is coming after the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. It will take a long while before we see the sequel to The Batman in theaters given that Reeves is still working on the screenplay. It will be safe to assume that a sequel would come out in 2025 at the earliest. Hopefully, we will get a better idea about The Batman 2 once Gunn and Safran unveil their master plan for the DC Universe this year. Gunn has promised to reveal more information about the new DC Universe in 2023.
