Despite being barely a decade old and two games deep, The Last of Us is one of the best-selling video game franchises in history with more than 30 million units sold. It would be a reasonable expectation then that Naughty Dog will revisit it at some point. Although a new The Last of Us game is technically in development, the multiplayer spin-off isn’t a follow-up. Thus, fans are still curious to find out if Naughty Dog still has the resources to devote to a threequel, especially with HBO’s The Last of Us expected to last at least a couple of seasons. Speaking to THR as part of his ongoing press tour for HBO’s The Last of Us, which hits HBO Max and HBO on January 15, Druckmman shared that “there’s more story to tell” in regards to the video game side of the multimedia franchise. This is the first time we’re hearing of a potential threequel to The Last of Us, and it’s telling that it comes on the same day Druckmann shared new concept art for the multiplayer spin-off as well as just weeks following rumors that Naughty Dog is working on The Last of Us Part 3. Not to mention, The Last of Us will celebrate its 10th birthday later this year, so what would be a better way to cap off its 10th anniversary than by telling everyone that The Last of Us Part 3 is coming? Even though The Last of Us Part 3 likely won’t be available until the PlayStation 6 comes out sometime in 2026, a release window, even if it’s still very far away, is better than nothing. It’ll definitely be interesting to see which narrative direction The Last of Us Part 3 will take. Is it going to take place many years into the future, with a now-Joel-aged Ellie? Or, is it going to pick up shortly after the events of The Last of Us Part 2? There are many questions we’re just dying to find out the answer to, but for now, we’ll have to settle for HBO’s The Last of Us, which, according to the reports, is one of the company’s most expensive TV shows ever.
