According to Derry Girls star, Nicola Coughlan, who also portrays Penelope Featherington in Bridgerton, Season 3 will focus on the love story between her character and Luke Newton’s Colin Bridgerton. This is a departure from Julia Quinn’s novels, which originally highlighted Luke Thompson’s Benedict Bridgerton in the third book. Instead, the show will simply skip to the fourth book, Romancing Mister Bridgerton, which featured Colin and Penelope. Don’t worry, as Bridgerton can still circle back to the events of An Offer From a Gentleman in the fourth season. In a Variety interview, Bridgerton showrunner, Jess Brownell, explained the reason behind the switch, saying “I really feel like it’s Colin and Penelope’s time”, adding that the third season “felt like the perfect moment to tee it up.” At the same time, Brownell reassured fans who are looking forward to seeing Benedict’s time in the spotlight, claiming that the second eldest Bridgerton sibling “will be a vital part of Season 3.” Ultimately, Bridgerton fans don’t need to concern themselves with the series’ and how it is not 100% compliant with the books. It’s not like this is the first time, and as an ensemble show, this was bound to happen, eventually. Not to mention, Bridgerton is not about to end soon. In addition to the third season, Netflix has already renewed Bridgerton for a fourth. It’s also almost guaranteed that Shonda Rhimes’ first Netflix collaboration will get a chance to adapt all eight of Quinn’s novels. Speaking of Netflix, it’s been quite the ride for the world’s leading streaming platform these past few months. After growing every year, Netflix finally hit a brick wall, losing subscribers for the first time in over a decade. This has resulted in massive layoffs and the cancellation of popular shows like Space Force. Perhaps in an attempt to stop further losses, Netflix is releasing new seasons of Cobra Kai, Stranger Things, and Love, Death + Robots, in the next few months.
