As per Sony, the new animated Spider-Man movie will be split into two parts and renamed to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Part One of Across the Spider-Verse will debut on October 7, 2022.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailer teases more screentime for Spider-Man 2099
It appears that the two-part superhero movie bug has bitten Sony’s animated Spider-Man film, with 2022’s Across the Spider-Verse being part of a larger story. The trailer was first released on Twitter and picks up exactly right from the end of Into the Spider-Verse with Gwen Stacy calling out to Miles Morales from another universe. She then jumps through what appears to be a portal to crash into Miles’ childhood room as he coaxes him into going out with her. The trailer then takes us to Miles jumping through different universes while fighting against Spider-Man 2099.

Thankfully, now that it’s here, we finally know a couple of key details about Across the Spider-Verse. For example, after a brief appearance at the end of Into the Spider-Verse, Miguel O’Hara’s Spider-Man 2099 appears to take on a bigger role in the two-part sequel. We also know that Issa Rae will join the cast as Spider-Woman Jessica Drew. Unfortunately, her character wasn’t featured in the trailer. So far, we have no idea yet which of the previous versions of Spider-Man from Spider-Verse will re-appear outside of Spider-Gwen. However, judging by the first film’s success, we wouldn’t be surprised if Across the Spider-Verse brings back Jake Johnson’s gruff and oddly-related Peter B. Parker while also introducing more Spider-Man characters from other universes. Ultimately, there are two main takeaways from the first Across the Spider-Verse trailer: it’s cut into two parts, and that it’s coming in 2022. Barring any delays, we’re only less than a year away from Across the Spider-Verse’s theatrical debut in October 2022. This suggests that Sony is already finished working on Part One with work on Part Two possibly already getting started. IT goes to show just how much confidence Sony has in its animated Spider-Man film. It will be interesting to see if Sony will release Part Two of Across the Spider-Verse first before the planned animated all-female Spider-Verse movie or if it’s the other way around. In the meantime, Spider fans can keep themselves busy watching No Way Home once the record-setting movie drops in theaters in a few weeks. Gamers can also look forward to Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man sequel, which will feature both Miles Morales and Peter Parker fighting against (or alongside?) Venom.
