The Suicide Squad hype train is on full speed
Warner Bros. was quick to take advantage of James Gunn’s firing from Disney over some controversial tweets. After giving him full creative freedom to work on any DC property that he wanted, we now have The Suicide Squad. For those that don’t know, the film centers around DC’s infamous covert team of agents that are composed of detainees from the villain-filled Belle Reve Penitentiary. The entire project is the brainchild of Amanda Waller, a high-ranking government official who sees superpowered beings as a threat to humanity but isn’t above taking advantage of them when she sees fit. She offers the villains shortened prison sentences in exchange for their services, which often includes risking their lives. The Suicide Squad acts as a soft reboot to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad film from 2016. It retains some of the cast members from the 2016 film, including Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, who recently shared her thoughts about the future of Harley Quinn. Speaking of Ayer’s Suicide Squad, Gunn’s take will see them head on over to the fictional South American country of Corto Maltese. Apparently, the squad will need to take care of a giant starfish with telepathic abilities, among others, known as Starro. Judging from the recent TV spot, the services of Task Force X are desperately needed there. With The Suicide Squad set to premiere on August 6, tickers will start going on sale on July 14. To celebrate this, a brand new IMAX poster for The Suicide Squad was released. As we’ve already mentioned, the poster assembles everyone that is a part of Gunn’s version of the notorious Task Force X. Can The Suicide Squad make history for the DCEU?
Even if The Suicide squad is going to release on HBO Max at the same time as it premieres in theaters, the IMAX poster serves as a reminder that Warner Bros. intended for the film to be watched in IMAX theaters. In fact, according to Gunn, the crew filmed The Suicide Squad using IMAX cameras. This should give audiences another reason to secure IMAX tickets as soon as possible. This way, they can enjoy The Suicide Squad the way that Gunn intended it to be. Having said that, The Suicide Squad might benefit from the reopening of theaters all across the United States. Godzilla vs. Kong was the first to take the proverbial splash and it ended up swimming in cash. The blockbuster ended up making more than $450 million at the box office against a budget of $200 million. Meanwhile, films such as A Quiet Place Part II, F9, and Black Widow, have since enjoyed similarly successful runs. Black Widow, in particular, recently set a new record by raking in $87 million in its opening weekend (on top of $60 million from Disney Plus subscriptions), which should bode well for The Suicide Squad. Then again, Gunn’s film will need all the help that it can get. Although it was critically panned, Ayer’s film was a huge box office success. It made nearly $750 million in the box office against a $175 million budget. As unfair as it is, naysayers and critics will damn The Suicide Squad if it falls short of approaching the said numbers.
