That said, today we are going to show you the top 10 rarest mounts - but that are still obtainable - in Final Fantasy XIV, so you can spend countless hours farming, and grinding, and enduring just for the sole reason of gallivanting in Eorzea with an aristocratic specimen (or invention) that less than 5% of the player base has. Disclaimer: this list, which is from least to most rare, may change as Final Fantasy XIV updates and implements new mounts, or as players achieve them.
Construct VII
The Onsal Hakair was the last Frontline (PvP battleground) added in Final Fantasy XIV. To get this one, you must earn the achievement “One Steppe at a time V,” which requires you to achieve a total of 100 victories with any of the three Grand Companies at Onsal Hakair. Onsal Hakair is my favorite Frontline. Capturing oovoos is more rewarding than nodes because once claimed, no opponent can steal them. But reaching 100 wins is a bit tricky because you have to rely on the other 23 members of your raid to do their part as well. I have close to a 33% win rate distributed between the first, second, and third place in my Frontline matches history. Following this ratio, I would have to solo queue for 300 Onsal Hakair. The time limit for a match is 20 minutes, and usually, a Grand Company cap the 1600 point in more or less 15 minutes. A quick sum shows that I would have to invest 4,500 minutes in Onsal Hakair to get Construct VII. That’s roughly 75 hours of gameplay. Also, the Frontline battleground rotates daily, so you get Onsal Hakair every four days.
Morbol
To ride in this den of diseases, you need to get your Blue Mage out of the drawer and earn the True Blue achievement. However, this achievement results from a total of eight achievements that require you to kill six bosses in their savage difficulty from previous expansions, with Undersized Party turned off, and Silence Echo turned on. The Blue Unchained achievement is earned after killing the last bosses from the three segments of the Coil of Bahamut.
Mightier than the Dragon - Complete the Binding Coil of Bahamut - Turn 5. Mightier than the Raven - Complete the Second Coil of Bahamut - Turn 4 Mightier than the Dreadwyrm - Complete the Final Coil of Bahamut - Turn 4
The Masked Conqueror achievement takes us back to Alexander’s raids to kill the savage versions of the three-part last bosses.
Mightier than the Manipulator - Complete Alexander - The Burden of the Father (Savage) Mightier than Justice - Complete Alexander - The Burden of the Son (Savage) Mightier than the Prime - Complete Alexander - The Soul of the Creator (Savage)
With both The Blue Unchained and The Masked Conqueror achievements, you will unlock the True Blue and the Morbol. If you played Blue Mage, you know how you can steamroll most dungeons with their insane arsenal of magic. However, with level sync and the lack of a dedicated tank, things can get nasty pretty fast in these raid bosses. Not only do you need to learn their strategy thoroughly, you and I both know the true challenge of this achievement is to find seven more players available and willing to eliminate all the bosses.
Gloria-class Airship
This is another Achievement-earned mount that requires some grinding, albeit not as extensive as others in the list. To get the Gloria-class Airship, you need the “You Are What You Eat IV” achievement, which is gained by winning 200 matches at the Feast, FFXIV PVP arena equivalent. There are two major issues here with this achievement. First, queueing for the Feast. The queue time always shows more than 30 minutes wait when I queue for ranked matches. Even waiting more than an hour, a training match never popped up. Then, you need to win the match. Unfortunately, in lower ranks, you may have the displeasure of encountering the toxic community portion of FFXIV. It’s pretty common that after one party member dies and you are on the losing side that one of your so-called colleagues just gives up and starts jumping directly into the fray in a suicidal act, thus giving up their medals and throwing the match. Needless to say, this egotistical attitude of some players can make this long journey even longer than needed. However, if you manage to get 200 Feast wins in one season, chances are excellent that you may find yourself in the Top 100 of the season and score one of the rarest mounts out there that only the Top 100 players of the season get. They are omitted from this list because they change seasonally.
Magicked Card
The minigames in Final Fantasy are excellent, but one of them has a reserved space in the hearts of gamers: Triple Triad (thank God it’s not Tetra Master). FFXIV brings the glorious FFVIII card minigame as recreation when you’re tired of slaying godlike beings and just wanna have some fun on cards. Magicked card Mount is a reward for effusive Triple Triad players who collect cards numbered 1 through 312. Square Enix didn’t ask to collect all cards because they probably will add more cards in the following expansions. Triple Triad is entertaining, but it can be quite a nuisance depending on the region’s rules. However, the RNG of the card drops destroys the Triple Triad completionist wannabe spirit the most. It is common to face and beat an opponent 10, 20, or even 30 times before he drops your desired card - and I’m not even counting cards that drop from Savage Trials or NPCs that only face you after completing old-content grinding quests, like Hydatos. If you wanna be a Triple Triad baller, you gonna have to hustle.
Gilded Mikoshi
This one is easy to find but hard to get. It’s simple because you just need to buy it from an NPC, Edelina, at Mor Dhona (x:22.2, y:4.9). Easy-peasy, right? Only if you have 50 million Gil lying around in an overseas account. 50 million Gil! You can buy a large plot of housing land and permission and house an entire Free Company with that money. In all my eight years of playtime, I managed to accumulate at most 25 million, and that was because I had a seasonal item, which I managed to sell for an exorbitant price. Honestly, though, farming 50 million Gil may be easier than winning at PVP, getting all cards, or earning some really insane Achievements. However, one must have way more than 50 million in the account to spend it mindlessly on a golden mount equal to the one you can get from the Nanamu beast tribe while being paid to do so.
Resplendent Vessel of Ronka
If you have the aforementioned mount and this one, sugar-parent spotted. Resplendent Vessel of Ronka functions precisely as the above. You buy it from Tabeth, an NPC located at Eulmore (x:10.1, y:11.2) for the paltry sum of 25 million Gil. There’s not much else to say. The Vessel of Ronka mount is earned from the Qitari Beast Tribes, and the only difference from this one to the other is the golden-colored paint job it received. If it’s your jam to flash your money while riding it, go on. You will also be part of the exclusive club of less than 2% player base who have invested their hard-earned money in the Great Serpent of Ronka gold version.
Centurio Tiger
Final Fantasy XIV has some monsters that can be hunted (killed) that provide seals, a currency used to buy specific items. Among them, the most common are maps that increase your mount speed in certain areas. The hunts are divided into regular, B Rank, A Rank, and S Rank (there’s an extra SS rank in Shadowbringers). To get Centurio Tiger, you need to kill 3,000 A rank hunts and 2,000 S rank hunts. Now, to clarify, old content A and S rank can be soloed with a high-level character. However, they have some spawn timers, so you can’t farm them endlessly. A ranks vary from 3:20 to 5 hours respawn. S rank requires players to fulfill certain conditions for it to spawn, and their timers are ludicrous, ranging from 32 hours to the absurdity of 132 hours respawn timers. I will not do the math to not discourage anyone who wants to ride this wonderful tiger, but here’s a good tip. There are hunt trains, parties organized explicitly to hunt these creatures. You can also jump to other servers in your data center and participate in their hunt trains, which should speed up the process a bit, although it will still be time-consuming.
Astrope
Astrope is, in my view, the rarest of them all. To get this stallion, you need to complete 2,000 duties via the Duty Roulette: Mentor. And to unlock this roulette, you need to be a Battle Mentor. Becoming a Battle Mentor requires completing 1,000 instanced dungeons, trials, or raids, completing the level 80 role quest for Tanks, Healers, and either Physical or Magical DPS, and, the hardest one, getting 1,500 player commendations. Fulfilling the level 80 role quests and instanced dungeons are straightforward. However, player commendations depend greatly on your excellence in a random group and your party members’ willingness to commend you. Once you become a Battle Mentor, you will unlock the Duty Roulette: Mentor, which randomly throws you in almost every duty the game has so far, except savage raids and current expansion extreme trials. And then you need to complete 2,000 duties. Considering you can join some ungrateful complex Extreme trials where your party is oblivious to the boss’s strategy, expect to spend months or even years farming for this majestic unicorn pegasus.
Triceratops
The requirements to get the first dinosaur on the list are similar to those of the Centurio Tiger. The only difference is that you need to kill 2,000 A rank hunts and 1,000 S rank hunts of Norvrandt, that is, Shadowbringers hunts. On the bright side, you can farm for both the Tiger and Triceratops at the same time. On the not-so-bright side, there are only six (seven if you count the rare SS rank) S-rank hunts in Shadowbringer. So participating in every hunt on your server will have you killing more or less 42 S rank hunts monthly. 1,000 divided by 42, and you get almost two years of beast slaying to get a Triceratops.
Pteranodon
I believe the two rarest mounts are dinosaurs because you need to start farming in prehistory if you want to get both. Getting the Pteranodon is more boring than lengthy. You need to earn 500,000 points toward your skyward score as every Disciple of the Hand and Land. You earn skyward scores by farming in Diadem and helping the Ishgard Restoration. The entire server gave a hand to restore Ishgard. Still, if you ever wanted to farm for Pteranodon, you could practically rebuild it single-handedly due to the amount of crafting and gathering this mount demands. Some players said they could reach the required skyward score for one crafting discipline every 3 days with a dedicated 8-12 hours daily farm. Gatherers, on the other hand, are the real challenge. However, if you join this grinding journey, your bank account will certainly appreciate it. One player claimed that after he got the Pteranodon, he also had 50 million extra Gil, which you can use to buy a Gilded Mikoshi and satisfy the mount completionist within you.
