A select few got the chance to watch the same trailer at CinemaCon 2021. Now, everyone can enjoy watching Keanu Reeves’ return to one of his most iconic roles nearly two decades after the last The Matrix film premiered way back in 2003.

The first Matrix: Resurrections trailer does not disappoint

The trailer sees the return of Reeves as Neo along with Carrie-Anne Moss reprising her role as Trinity and Neil Patrick Harris playing Neo’s therapist. “Am I crazy?” asks a pre-awakened Thomas Anderson, to which Harris’ character simply replies, “We don’t use that word in here.” What’s perhaps the most interesting part of the trailer is what many believe is Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s character is a young Morpheus. The unnamed figure hands over a red pill to Neo, telling him that “it’s time to fly.” Older Matrix fans will definitely love what they saw from the upcoming sequel’s first trailers. From the black cats to the dojo fights and high-speed action sequences on a train, among others, this is a true Matrix sequel with the potential to surpass the original trilogy. From what we can take away from the trailer, the story of the latest Matrix film will see Neo follow a woman to learn more about what happened. Speaking of learning, the trailer and previous teasers leave a lot of questions unanswered. After all, the last Matrix film, The Matrix: Revolutions, saw Neo and Trinity die after agreeing to sacrifice themselves and destroy Agent Smith’s program from within. The last we saw of Neo, the machines were respectfully carrying away his corpse. It was an awesome sight to see and spelled a fitting end for The Matrix franchise. It also leaves audiences wondering how the sequel will bring back both Neo and Trinity. Does this mean that Resurrections is a prequel? Maybe it takes place in an alternate reality? We’ll find out the answers to these questions and more once Resurrections premieres in theaters later in December this year. Until then, we’ll just have to make do with multiple rewatches of the same trailer as we speculate about who’s who and what the heck is going on.
