Weta Workshop is a New Zealand-based company that specializes in doing special effects and props. The studio made a name for itself after working on all three of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies as well as 2005’s King Kong reboot, among several others. According to the announcement, Weta will lead the development of the untitled Middle-Earth game. Weta established a game studio in 2014. This isn’t the first time that we’ve heard about Weta’s new game. Last year, Weta was seen hiring for a “Major Worldwide IP”. It’s safe to say that the studio has since found its game producer and more for the game. Weta’s experience when it comes to video games is spotty at best, but Private Division has a proven track record. Not to mention, it is confirmed that Middle-Earth Enterprises has given Weta “the broadest creative license to interpret the underlying lore of the books.” Or, to put it simply, Weta has the green light to do whatever the heck it wants. But, since the game isn’t expected to launch until the 2024 fiscal year, we’re still around a year away from a trailer. In the meantime, LOTR fans can look forward to watching The Rings of Power on September 2. Unfortunately, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum isn’t coming out anytime soon after it’s on an indefinite delay. Finally, Monolith Productions, the studio behind Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, is working on an open-world Wonder Woman game, so don’t expect any LOTR game from them anytime soon.
